Fibretek Developments (Fibretek) was formed in 1988 by Peter Mundell as a Close Corporation for the development of high duty application fibre-reinforced composite products. Fibretek was awarded a contract to manufacture under licence a carbon fibre reinforced attachment medical device used in ligament reconstruction.
In 1990 the business was registered as a (Pty) Ltd company with other shareholders, and since then has specialised in the design, manufacture, commercialisation and marketing of specialised medical devices and instrumentation. A visual field analyser, the Optoscan was developed by Fibretek and has been marketed locally and for export since 1990.
In 1996, the total shareholding of Fibretek was re-acquired by Peter Mundell, and has since commercialised a neurosurgery guidance system; the Cape Town Stereotactic Pointer (CTSP), which was developed at the University of Cape Town. Local distribution of products is handled directly by Fibretek. Overseas distributors are appointed to market and distribute products, and in some cases sales are direct to the end user.
Interest in the products stems from their cost competitiveness and other advantages over similar equipment.
Fibretek is an accredited ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 company through the Germany based quality management auditors, DQS.
The manufacture of custom designed moulds and dies, and specialised component parts such as printed circuit boards and vacuumed formed casings for the Optoscan, and machined components and instrument cases for the CTSP, are sub-contracted to approved and closely monitored suppliers. Final assembly, calibration, packaging and marketing are handled directly by Fibretek.
Stringent controls are applied to all operations, activities and the products, ensuring that high quality is maintained throughout all manufacturing, assembly, calibration and testing processes. Fibretek prides itself in the after-sales back up, which it offers to its customers and overseas distributors.
